Love! Not For Everyone Poets and philosophers for centuries have been trying to answer the question, what is love? Love has an infinite number of definitions, which vary from one person to another. Love cannot be measured by any physical means. One may never know what true love is until love it- self has been experienced. What is love? A four letter word that causes a person to behave in a way that is out of character. What is love? A first kiss, childhood crushes on a teacher or friend’s mom. What is love? A choice that people make by putting their partner’s wishes, desires and needs above everything else. What is love? The act of forgiveness, the infatuation with someone, the communication between two people. What is love? A†¦show more content†¦The speaker loves her husband so much that she is willing to meet him no matter what the distance between them might be. Love is the constant care and affection that is needed to flourish and bloom into great beauty. Love is the commitment that two people share. Jarold Ramsey’s poem â€Å"The Tally Stick† is a great example of the commitment that two people share. The speaker says, â€Å"Here from the start, from our first days, look: / I have carved our lives in secret on this stick† (1-2). Starting with their marriage, the first notch is â€Å"Near the butt, this intricate notch where the grains / converge and join: it is our wedding† (6-7). The couple uses the stick as a symbol of their love for each other. The stick symbolizes how committed they are in their relationship. Love is a commitment one makes to put someone’s wishes, desires and needs above all. What if the husband or wife became ill or cannot take care of him or herself anymore? Or perhaps the spouse got orders to go to Iraq, or maybe the spouse got a job offer in another state. What will happen to the life that is shared? Does the spouse give up and move on? No! The spouse’s love and comm itment will keep them together even if they are far away, or moving to another state, or becomes ill. Because love is unconditional, spouses can endure all hardships that cross their path. Love is an infatuation between two people and the desire to be desired.
